OMTI seeks to implement federal grants in the fields of education and social services.  Combined with the expertise of other nonprofits and business professionals, the agency offers consultation services for community projects and mission-related social programs. 

Mentionable Ventures

  • Serving as the Project Evaluator for the federally-funded Parent Assistance Center grant informing parents with disabled children.  Federal education grant awarded to Halifax County Schools and Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church.
  • Attending and disseminating information to partnering agencies that serve at-risk teens from conferences and workshops on OMTI core topics including: Human Trafficking– A Community Call to Action Event.  “Crimes of exploitation target the weak, the disconnected, the vulnerable, and particularly, people in crisis and poverty,” (Community  Partnership Network).

  • Participating in NC Office of Economic Opportunity conference as vendor and advertising our work with youth of the Competitive Abstinence Education grant program (USDHHS).

“Nafia Speach volunteers and helps distribute conference give-always for One Mission Tree, Inc. at the Office of Economic Opportunity conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary, NC.  Give-ways included tissues, fresh naps, and disinfectant wipes for the theme: ‘Lets wipe out poverty’.”

  • Sponsoring youth (scholarship, fees) for the Preventing Crime in the Black Community Conference in Miami, Florida.
  • Involving youth in service projects. OMTI was recipient of 50 Azaleas from NC Beautiful—a foundation that gives away 5,000 Azaleas per year for free to nonprofits who apply and meet requirements, such as plants cannot be for personal use, youth must be involved in planting and maintenance. 
  • Submitting grant applications for OMTI and other nonprofits in the focus areas: drop-out prevention, teen pregnancy prevention, trafficking prevention among teens, strengthening families in low-wealth communities, healthy relationships, fatherhood, and at-risk youth (particularly those with disabilities and incarcerated parents).
  • Assisting novice nonprofits apply for state and federal grant funds, such as Glory to Glory House of Refuse that received NC HOPWA funding (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS). 

  • On-going partnering with North Carolina Community Action Association, Inc. (NCCAA) whose mission is poverty elimination and economic self-sufficiency for North Carolina vulnerable families.
  • Donating volunteer time, educational supplies, and cash to programs serving at risk youth.  Staff members have provided significant volunteer hours with the federal Sexual Risk Avoidance Education and Competitive Abstinence Education projects.

  • Growing and Expanding.  In 2013, OMTI assumed the assets and objectives of the folding nonprofit, Halifax Organizes for Marriage Education, Inc. (HOME) and engaged in training and family, marriage- and healthy relationship skill-building for teens and couples.

Executive Board & Membership

The 5-member Board elects to meet annually in Florida. Next meeting June 2026.

Cynthia J. Harris, President 

[History: Harris Educators and Associates for Research Training, and Services, Inc. (HEARTS), a 501(C)(3), was established in year 2000. The agency was restructured in 2002 as a sustaining mechanism for the $3.3 million Compassion Capital Fund Demonstration Program grant (CCF) administered by CJH Educational Grant Services, Inc. The local 3-year CCF initiative was called “MISSION TREE.” HEARTS adapted this name and later officially changed to “One Mission Tree, Inc.”  Restructuring included the adoption of this name along with the addition of faith and community-based components.]
